I am and have always been reliable, a rock solid presence for my friends and family. In my younger years, I placed a high value on also being consistent. I was naive to think that once you become established as an “adult”, you pretty much are who you will be. It felt somehow safe and right to know that I and my loved ones could take comfort in knowing who I am and counting on me to show up as expected...until it didn’t.
As my 20’s unfolded into my 30’s, I realized that what I most need from myself, and from my relationships, is the freedom to grow, learn and change. That, whether we like it or not, I encounter periods of deep growth and transformation and literally become a new person at the cellular, spiritual and emotional level every 7-10 years. These growth spurts are amazing and confusing and often painful, but each time I step more fully into the person I am meant to be...and into a more extraordinary life. When I hear the call to change I know I, and those who love me, are in for a wild ride. I go from feeling ease, like I mostly have things figured out to starting anew, as though it’s the first day of 7th grade and nothing feels sure. It is anything but comfortable but it is the fertile ground out of which the most incredible experiences of my life emerge. It is true that consistency feels solid and safe, but for me it came at a cost of being ordinary, predictable, and stuck. As it turns out, I can be reliable, loyal, loving AND extraordinary at the same time. When all is said and done, I would much rather be the friend, sister, partner who showed up with my light shining bright...who surprised, inspired, delighted and challenged my loved ones to see more possibilities within themselves and shine with me.
